I joined Delta Air Lines in June 1988 after serving in the United States Air Force. Over the years, I have held multiple roles within our Logistics and Recovery teams, ultimately transitioning to AOG in 1998. Today, I lead Delta’s AOG team from within our Operations and Customer Center (OCC), where my primary responsibility is to remove obstacles that impede my team’s ability to rapidly deliver parts to grounded aircraft worldwide. Our team sets the industry standard, and my commitment remains to uphold and strengthen that reputation for the future.

The increasing complexity of supply chains has reinforced the importance of contingency planning in AOG management. Airlines must support each other in critical situations to ensure operational continuity. The ability to loan and borrow parts is crucial, as no airline can always have the right component in the right place at the right time. Additionally, strategically repurposing parts from one aircraft to another can be decisive in mitigating delays in time-sensitive AOG scenarios. To effectively manage AOG events, it is essential to have highly skilled professionals who thrive under pressure and embrace the challenges of this fast-paced environment.

Integrating Technology with Human Expertise

As the aviation industry increasingly embraces data-driven decision-making, balancing advanced analytics with human expertise remains critical. While data provides invaluable insights into maintenance patterns and component performance, experienced professionals must interpret and apply this information effectively. At Delta, our Predictive Technologies Engineering team leverages data to proactively assess system and component health, allowing us to address potential failures before they occur. However, while technology enhances efficiency, the intuition and decision-making of seasoned experts ultimately drive successful AOG management.

Technological advancements continue to transform AOG operations. Predictive maintenance, AI-driven logistics, and automated inventory management have optimized response times and improved efficiency. These relationships will prove invaluable throughout your career. The essence of effective AOG management lies not just in reacting to crises but in proactively shaping strategies that prevent them.

An esteemed colleague once shared a guiding principle that has deeply influenced my approach to AOG management:
